Sometimes things do not work like they should.
If you have tried the default setup for Solution-Pac and cannot get the program to communicate with your UPS, then things must be verified one by one.
When setting up a UPS on your server or workstation, it is important to verify that the Com port you are using has the proper settings.
Those settings are…
Bits per second: 2400
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None
Under the Advanced button…
De-select "Use FIFO buffers"
Here are the steps for setting a Com port under Windows 95 or 98…
1. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
2. Click on Device Manager, then double-click on Ports (Com & LPT).
3. Select the port you want to use and click on Properties. For this example, let's select Com port 1.
4. Verify under the General tab in the Device Status window that you have the message, "This device is working properly."
5. Click on the Port Settings tab. Verify the settings above - 9600 / 8 / None / 1 / None.
6. Click on the Advanced tab. Verify that "Use FIFO buffers" is not selected. Then click "OK" three times to close the windows.
7. Now reboot the computer. The new Com port settings will take effect and you should be able to communicate.
8. If you still cannot communicate, there are a few other things to check.
9. Check the cable to be sure it is plugged in securely on the PC end and on the UPS end. Also take the time to verify that you have the correct cable! The cable number is usually printed on the PC-end.
· For the Windows OS, use cable number 51029056AB.
· For a UNIX machine, you need to use cable number 6733932A. Or you can temporarily use a Windows cable, but break off Pin 6 on the male end of the cable.
10. You can also check the CMOS settings of your computer to verify that the Com port you are using is enabled and assigned the proper settings in CMOS. The settings should be…
· Com 1 IRQ4 address 3F8
· Com 2 IRQ3 address 2F8
· Com 3 IRQ4 address 3E8
· Com 4 IRQ3 address 2E8
11. When you install Personal Solution-Pac, please un-check the box for PnP UPS and specify the Com port you are using when you enter the Configuration screen during Setup. If you already have the software installed, you can check the configuration by going to Start, Programs, MGE Office Protection Systems, PSP Configuration.
12. Of course, help is always nearby. If you need help, an MGE Office Protection Systems Customer Service Representative will help you with the settings. You can call for Software Support at 714-557-1637 x1111, or at 800-523-0142 x1111.
